How Does the New Tax Law Affect Charitable Giving?

As Christians, we are called to be generous. God has been so generous with us that he expects us to respond in kind. King David so aptly stated, “Everything comes from you, and we have given only what comes from your hand.” (1 Chronicles 29:14)

While we reflect God’s generosity, we should do so wisely. There are certain opportunities available to save on taxes through charitable giving, which can enable us to give even more.

Tax Reform and 3 Ways to Make the Most of it

America changed on December 22nd when President Trump signed a bill enacting the biggest tax overhaul in decades. One highlight of the new law is the near doubling of the standard deduction. Just how much this and the other changes will impact households, our economy, and our federal budget is the topic of much debate. These new tax laws won’t impact 2017 taxes that will get filed by April of this year.

Jesus commissions His disciples in Matthew chapter 10 to serve the sick and the marginalized in society. His words to them are of selfless generosity, saying “Freely you have received, now freely give”. In the same way, we should generously and joyfully give out of our abundance to the Church and to organizations that are outreaching to others in need - in fact there are many reasons why we should give willingly.

7 Reasons Why You Should Give Willingly

During this time of the year there are more opportunities to give than at any other time of the year.  Opportunities to give gifts to family, friends, and co-workers.  Opportunities to give financially to churches or other organizations who are doing year-end fundraising campaigns.  And opportunities to give to those in need every time that we walk past a red bucket and bell ringer.
